DC 9413 | 38 C.F.R. § 4.130 | M21-1, Part IV.ii.4.B
OVERVIEW
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is rated under DC 9413 using the same General Rating Formula for Mental Disorders. Like depression, anxiety frequently develops secondary to chronic pain or co-occurs with PTSD. All mental health conditions receive a single combined rating. Anxiety-specific symptoms include excessive worry, restlessness, difficulty concentrating, muscle tension, and sleep disturbance.
RATING CRITERIA (5 LEVELS)
100% — Total occupational and social impairment
Same General Rating Formula criteria as other mental health conditions at the 100% level.
70% — Deficiencies in most areas
Near-continuous panic or anxiety affecting independent function, obsessional rituals, inability to adapt to stressful circumstances.
50% — Reduced reliability and productivity
Panic attacks more than once a week, difficulty understanding complex commands, impaired judgment.
30% — Occasional decrease in work efficiency
Anxiety, suspiciousness, panic attacks weekly or less, chronic sleep impairment.
10% — Mild symptoms controlled by medication
Symptoms affect work only during significant stress.
