Looking ahead
Projected rates for 2027 -- 2029 modeled from this 2026 baseline using SSA Trustees Report COLA scenarios.
The 2.8% Cost of Living Adjustment for 2026 was announced by the Social Security Administration in October 2025 based on the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W). VA disability compensation rates are tied to the same percentage under 38 U.S.C. § 1114, applied uniformly across the rating schedule under 38 C.F.R. § 3.23.
December 1, 2025. The first paycheck reflecting the 2026 rates was the January 2026 payment.
How is the combined rating calculated?
VA uses the whole-person method under 38 C.F.R. § 4.25. Ratings are not added; each rating is applied to the remaining unimpaired efficiency. The free ClaimRecon calculator does this exactly.
What does SMC-K cover?
Special Monthly Compensation under 38 U.S.C. § 1114(k) is paid for qualifying anatomical loss or loss of use (e.g., loss of a creative organ, loss of use of one hand or foot). It stacks on top of the rating-based pay -- it does not replace it.
Where do these numbers come from?
Directly from VA.gov's published 2026 compensation rate tables (effective December 1, 2025). Each table on this page maps 1:1 to the VA's published schedule.
