Roughly 35,000 veterans experience homelessness on any given night in the United States. Over 50% have a diagnosed mental health condition. If you are a veteran without stable housing, or you know one, everything on this page is free and most of it does not require VA enrollment.

HOUSING PROGRAMS
These VA and federal programs provide housing assistance specifically for veterans. Most can be accessed through the hotline above or through your local VA.
SSVF (Supportive Services for Veteran Families)
The largest VA homeless prevention program. SSVF provides rapid re-housing, temporary financial assistance (rent, utilities, deposits, moving costs), case management, and connections to other VA services. Available to veterans and their families who are homeless or at imminent risk.
How to access: Call 1-877-424-3838 for a referral, or search for SSVF providers in your area at the link below. Over 70,000 veteran households received SSVF assistance in 2023.

HUD-VASH (Housing & Urban Development - VA Supportive Housing)
Combines a HUD housing choice voucher with VA case management and clinical services. The voucher pays most of your rent directly to your landlord. VA provides ongoing support including mental health, substance use treatment, and employment services. Over 100,000 veterans have received permanent housing through HUD-VASH since 2008.
How to access: Apply through your local VA medical center. Ask for a referral to the HUD-VASH program, or call 1-877-424-3838.

Grant and Per Diem (GPD) Program
Provides transitional housing for up to 24 months through community-based organizations. Includes case management, employment training, and life skills support.

VA Domiciliary Care
Residential rehabilitation programs for veterans who are homeless or at risk. Provides housing, food, medical care, vocational rehab, and substance use treatment at VA facilities.

WALK-IN OPTIONS (NO APPOINTMENT NEEDED)
VA Community Resource & Referral Centers
Walk-in centers at VA medical centers. Help with benefits, housing, employment, and immediate needs. No appointment, no enrollment. Just walk in and ask for a social worker.

StandDown Events
Community events held nationwide providing food, clothing, health screenings, legal aid, benefits enrollment, and VA services in one location. Usually 1-3 day events. Find one near you.

VA Health Care for Homeless Veterans (HCHV)
VA healthcare is available regardless of discharge status for conditions related to military service. Walk into any VA emergency department. No enrollment required for emergency care.

Call 1-800-827-1000 (VA benefits hotline) to start a claim by phone. A representative can take your information and connect you with a VSO.
Walk into any VA medical center and ask for a social worker. They can help you file a claim, apply for healthcare, and connect you with housing and employment resources. No appointment needed for social work services.
Visit your county VSO office in person. County veteran service officers are free, accredited, and available in nearly every county in the United States. They will help you file.
VA healthcare for homeless veterans is available regardless of discharge characterization for conditions related to military service. You do not need to be enrolled in VA healthcare to access homeless veteran programs.
Public libraries offer free internet access and often have veteran service coordinators or can help you reach one. Many VA regional offices also have public-access computers.

DOL-funded program providing job training, placement, and support services. Helps over 15,000 veterans find employment annually.
