Peripheral Neuropathy (Upper Extremity) VA Disability Rating
DC 8510-8519 | 38 C.F.R. § 4.124a | M21-1, Part IV.ii.3
OVERVIEW
Upper extremity peripheral neuropathy rated under the specific affected nerve. Median nerve (DC 8515), ulnar nerve (DC 8516), radial nerve (DC 8514). Dominant hand receives higher ratings. EMG/NCS testing determines severity. Common secondary to diabetes and cervical spine conditions.
RATING CRITERIA (3 LEVELS)
40%+ -- Severe limitation or ankylosis
Severe limitation of motion or ankylosis of the affected joint. Specific percentages depend on the joint and whether dominant/non-dominant.
20% -- Moderate limitation
Moderate limitation of motion with significant functional impairment. DeLuca factors may increase the effective rating.
10% -- Mild limitation or painful motion
Mild limitation of motion, or X-ray evidence of arthritis with painful motion under DC 5003.
