Bunions (Hallux Valgus) VA Disability Rating
DC 5280 | 38 C.F.R. § 4.71a | M21-1, Part IV.ii.2
OVERVIEW
Hallux valgus (bunions) is a deformity of the big toe joint, extremely common in veterans from ill-fitting military boots, marching, and prolonged standing. Rated under DC 5280 with a maximum schedular rating of 10% per foot. If surgery was performed or the bunion is severe enough to be equivalent to amputation of the great toe, 10% is assigned.
RATING CRITERIA (2 LEVELS)
10% -- Operated with resection of metatarsal head, or severe equivalent to amputation of great toe (DC 5280)
Maximum rating per foot. Requires surgery or severe deformity.
0% -- Mild to moderate hallux valgus
Bunion present but not severe enough for compensable rating.
KEY EVIDENCE TO GATHER
-X-ray showing hallux valgus angle measurement
-Surgical records if bunion surgery was performed
-Service records documenting foot complaints related to military footwear
-Treatment records for orthotics, padding, or accommodative shoes
SECONDARY CONDITIONS (3 MAPPED)
DC 5282
Bunion deformity shifts pressure to adjacent toes, causing hammertoe deformities.
DC 5276/5284
Altered foot mechanics from bunion stress the plantar fascia.
DC 5256-5263
Altered gait from foot deformity stresses the knee joint.
C&P EXAM TIPS (4)
1.The maximum rating per foot is only 10%, but bilateral bunions with bilateral factor plus secondary conditions (plantar fasciitis, knee, back) can build significant combined value.
2.If you had bunion surgery during or after service, bring surgical records.
3.Document how the bunion affects your ability to walk, stand, exercise, and wear shoes.
4.Military boots are a recognized cause of bunion formation. Document your boot-wearing history.
DOLLAR IMPACT
Bunions alone max at 10% per foot ($175/mo each). The real value is as an anchor for secondary conditions: plantar fasciitis (10-50%), knee (10-40%), back (10-40%).
