Anemia VA Disability Rating
DC 7700 | 38 C.F.R. § 4.117 | M21-1, Part IV.ii.12
OVERVIEW
Anemia is rated under DC 7700 (hypochromic-microcytic and megaloblastic anemia) based on hemoglobin level and symptom severity. Anemia in veterans is most commonly secondary to other service-connected conditions: chronic GI bleeding (hemorrhoids, GERD, Crohn's), NSAID-induced GI damage, kidney disease, or chronic inflammation. It is rarely a primary service-connected condition but adds significant combined value.
RATING CRITERIA (4 LEVELS)
70% -- Hemoglobin 7gm/100ml or below, with findings such as dyspnea on mild exertion, cardiomegaly, tachycardia
Severe anemia with cardiac complications.
30% -- Hemoglobin 8gm/100ml or below, with findings such as weakness, easy fatigability, headaches, lightheadedness, or shortness of breath
Moderate to severe anemia with symptoms.
10% -- Hemoglobin 10gm/100ml or below with findings such as weakness, easy fatigability, or headaches
Mild anemia with some symptoms.
0% -- Asymptomatic or hemoglobin above 10gm/100ml with minimal findings
Service-connected but asymptomatic.
KEY EVIDENCE TO GATHER
-CBC showing low hemoglobin, low MCV (microcytic) or high MCV (megaloblastic)
-Iron studies showing iron deficiency (low ferritin, low iron, high TIBC)
-Documentation of the cause: GI bleeding, NSAID use, chronic disease, malabsorption
-Records of iron infusions, blood transfusions, or B12 injections
SECONDARY CONDITIONS (2 MAPPED)
DC 6354
Anemia directly causes fatigue through reduced oxygen delivery.
DC N/A
Chronic anemia affects concentration and memory.
C&P EXAM TIPS (4)
1.Anemia is almost always claimed as SECONDARY to another service-connected condition (GERD/NSAID use, hemorrhoids, Crohn's, kidney disease).
2.Get serial CBC labs showing your hemoglobin trend over time. A consistent pattern below 10g/dl supports a compensable rating.
3.Document symptoms: fatigue, dizziness, shortness of breath, headaches, cold intolerance.
4.If you receive iron infusions or blood transfusions, document every treatment.
DOLLAR IMPACT
Anemia at 30% pays $552.47/mo. The primary strategic value is adding to combined ratings from digestive or other conditions that cause the anemia.
