A Veterans Service Organization is a VA-accredited representative that helps with your claim at no cost. Under 38 C.F.R. § 14.628, this representation is free. Use these locators to find one.
Once you appoint a VSO via VA Form 21-22, they can do all of this for you
File initial claims and appeals on your behalf
Review your evidence and identify gaps before submission
Represent you in C&P informal hearings and Board hearings
Access your VA records via Power of Attorney (VA Form 21-22)
Explain rating decisions and recommend next steps
Submit lay statements and develop a complete claim file
Three things to know
Free by law
Under 38 C.F.R. § 14.628, accredited VSO representation is free. If anyone charges you up front for initial claim help, that is a red flag and likely a violation.
Different from claim sharks
Unaccredited "consultants" charging percentage fees on initial claims are operating illegally. VSOs are vetted and bonded by the VA Office of General Counsel.
Single POA at a time
You can only have one Power of Attorney representative active at a time. You can switch later by filing a new VA Form 21-22.
