The single most important document proving your military service. Service dates, discharge characterization, awards, MOS, and the data that drives every VA benefit determination.

1. Request through the National Personnel Records Center (NPRC).
2. Submit SF-180 online at eVetRecs.archives.gov, or by mail.
3. Processing times vary from 10 days to several months.
4. Request the "Member 4" copy - most complete, with discharge characterization and reentry code.
5. Keep multiple certified copies in secure locations.

Issued to veterans enrolled in VA healthcare. Serves as proof of enrollment and for check-in at VA medical facilities.

1. Must be enrolled in VA healthcare first.
2. Request in person at any VA medical center.
3. Bring a valid government-issued photo ID.
4. Card mails within 7 to 10 business days.
5. Can also be requested through your VA healthcare coordinator.

Photo ID card available to all veterans with an honorable discharge. Proof of veteran status for veteran-targeted discounts and services from private businesses.

1. Apply online at VA.gov/records/get-veteran-id-cards/vic.
2. Must have an honorable discharge.
3. Upload a digital photo meeting passport photo standards.
4. Processing takes approximately 60 days.
5. Card mails to the address on file.

Most states offer a veteran designation on your driver license or state ID card. Often the most convenient form of veteran ID for everyday use.

1. Visit your state DMV or motor vehicle agency.
2. Bring your DD-214 or other proof of honorable discharge.
3. Requirements and fees vary by state.
4. Many states offer it free for veterans.
5. Usually added at next renewal or as a replacement card.
