Specially Adapted Housing and Special Housing Adaptation grants
The VA provides housing grants under 38 USC 2101 and 38 CFR 3.809 (SAH) and 38 CFR 3.809a (SHA) to help veterans with certain service-connected disabilities live more independently. These grants can fund home modifications or help purchase an adapted home. Grant amounts are adjusted annually.
For building, buying, or modifying a home to accommodate severe service-connected disabilities. Covers major structural changes like wheelchair ramps, widened doorways, roll-in showers, and other accessibility modifications.
For modifying an existing home to accommodate less severe but qualifying service-connected disabilities. Can also be used to modify a family member's home where the veteran resides.
For veterans temporarily living in a family member's home who need to adapt it for their disability-related needs. Available to veterans who qualify for SAH or SHA while deciding on a permanent home.
Grant amounts shown are for 2026 and are adjusted annually by the VA.
To be eligible for SAH or SHA grants, you must have a service-connected disability that includes one of the following:
Substantially prevents natural locomotion, including conditions requiring use of braces, crutches, canes, or a wheelchair.
Having only light perception in both eyes, plus loss of or loss of use of one lower extremity.
Loss of or loss of use of one lower extremity together with loss of or loss of use of one upper extremity, affecting balance or propulsion.
Full thickness or subdermal burns resulting in contractures with limitation of motion of two or more extremities or at least one extremity and the trunk.
ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) diagnosed as service-connected. ALS is presumptively service-connected for all veterans with 90+ days of active duty.
Residuals of an inhalation injury, including certain respiratory and neurological conditions requiring assistance with two or more self-care activities.
