91B Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic

U.S. Army
Equivalent: 3521 (USMC Automotive Maintenance Tech), 2T3 (USAF Vehicle Maintenance)
The 91B Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic performs maintenance and repair on military wheeled vehicles including HMMWVs, LMTVs, HETs, Strykers, and tactical trailers. Work involves sustained heavy lifting, working in and under vehicles in awkward positions, exposure to vehicle fluids and exhaust, high-decibel noise from engines and power tools, and deployment to combat zones where mechanics repair battle-damaged vehicles under austere conditions.
OCCUPATIONAL HAZARDS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS
-Heavy lifting of vehicle components (transmissions 200+ lbs, tires 80+ lbs, engines with hoists)
-Working under and inside vehicles in cramped, awkward positions for extended periods
-Exposure to vehicle fluids: diesel fuel, hydraulic fluid, brake fluid, engine oil, coolant
-High-decibel noise from engines, pneumatic tools, grinders, and motor pool operations
-Vibration exposure from pneumatic impact wrenches, grinders, and running vehicles
-Chemical exposure: solvents, degreasers, brake cleaner, paint
-Deployment to combat zones performing vehicle recovery and battle damage repair
-Burn pit and diesel exhaust exposure throughout deployment

MODERATE
Typical Ratings: 10%, 20%
Secondary to lumbar spine. Nerve compression from disc pathology caused by years of heavy lifting.
38 C.F.R. 4.124a, DC 8520; 38 C.F.R. 3.310
TYPICAL RATING CONSTELLATION
A 91B with 6+ years commonly has: lumbar spine (20%), bilateral knee (10% each), bilateral hearing loss (10%), tinnitus (10%), shoulder (10-20%), carpal tunnel (10% each hand). Combined: 60-80% before bilateral factor.
KEY CLAIM TIP
91B mechanics should document their lifting demands explicitly. Your MOS duty description establishes daily heavy lifting of 50-200+ lb components. The VA Duty MOS Noise Exposure Listing classifies you as highly probable for noise exposure. If you have DD Form 2216 audiograms showing threshold shifts, your hearing claim is nearly automatic.
