13F Fire Support Specialist

U.S. Army
Equivalent: 0861 (USMC Fire Support Man)
Formerly: Fire Support Specialist (unchanged since 1970s), FIST Member
The 13F Fire Support Specialist operates with maneuver units to call for and adjust indirect fire from artillery, mortars, and close air support. Typically embedded with infantry platoons, 13Fs carry all the same combat loads as infantry while also operating radios, laser designators, and digital fire control systems. One of the most combat-exposed MOS codes outside of infantry — 13Fs go where the infantry goes.
OCCUPATIONAL HAZARDS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS
-Carries same 60-120 lb combat load as infantry plus radio equipment (AN/PRC-152, JTAC equipment)
-Dismounted patrols embedded with infantry platoons in all terrain and weather
-Forward observer positions expose to direct and indirect fire, IEDs, and ambush
-High-decibel noise from weapons fire, explosions, radio headset noise
-Extreme heat/cold exposure during extended observation missions
-Sleep deprivation during continuous operations — FISTers are always on call
-Burn pit and propellant exposure at FOBs and patrol bases

TYPICAL RATING CONSTELLATION
A 13F with combat deployment commonly has: PTSD (50-70%), lumbar spine (20%), tinnitus (10%), hearing loss (0-10%), cervical spine (10-20%), bilateral knee (10% each), bilateral radiculopathy (10% each). Combined: 80-100% before bilateral factor.
KEY CLAIM TIP
13Fs are embedded with infantry but often overlooked as combat arms. Ensure your personnel records document your attachment to maneuver units. Your DD-214 may only show '13F' without reflecting the combat exposure you had. Buddy statements from infantry soldiers you operated with are critical for establishing your combat stressor.
